Questioning The Local And Financial Benefits Of Closing State Parks

By By Phil Boyle

As we fight through one of the worst recessions in the history of our state, it has become increasingly difficult for families to find the resources necessary to get away and take a vacation. At a time when many New York families are struggling due to the economic downturn, our state parks provide affordable, close-to-home recreational and vacation opportunities.

Recent speculative reports have led to a possible list of park closures and sources have stated that the list could include 10 of Long Island's 25 state parks, including Heckscher State Park.

Heckscher, which is located on the south shore of Long Island, attracts more than one million visitors a year. It includes a swimming pool complex and access to the Great South Bay, as well as more than 20 miles of trails for hikers, bikers and cross-country skiers. Visitors also enjoy picnic areas, a boat launch ramp, playing fields, a playground and 69 camp sites.

So, for a savings that will amount to a mere drop in the massive bucket that is our bloated state budget, the governor plans on taking away the few places that many Long Islanders can go to bond with their families and escape from their daily routines.

Once again, the people of New York are asked to carry the load created by Albany's culture of taxing and spending. Because of state government's penchant for unnecessary spending and passing the bill to taxpayers, it is very possible that our beloved parks could be on the verge of closure.

We must find a better solution for our budget woes - one that doesn't deplete our communities of necessary resources. Our children and families shouldn't be forced to drive past local parks, only to have the gates closed.

Phil Boyle is a Republican New York State Assemblyman representing West Islip.
